Mortgage loan officers routinely deal with their client's social security numbers. In this video, Dave King of Mortgage Sales Manager provides some little-known facts about these numbers. In 1935, local field offices began issuing social security number. The first three numbers, also referred to as the prefix, is based on the state in which it was issued. You can find charts online that show which numbers correspond to which states. This information works as a wonderful conversation builder with your clients. Not only can it be an ice breaker, but it's always interesting to learn about different places. Keep in mind, though, that this tactic won't be available to you forever. Starting in 2011, social security numbers underwent randomization which effectively eliminates any relationship between the numbers used and locations. As a final thought, Dave notes that social security numbers never start with 000, 9, or 666.
